MOBY DIVER CAL PHOTO

MOBY Diver Calibrations

Diver Calibrations are used to assess changes in collector throughput and detector response during the 3-6 month MOBY deployment. During the MOBY launch initial diver calibration data sets are acquired and a reference calibration data set is chosen. At monthly intervals during the deployment calibration data sets are obtained before and after each collector is cleaned. A final set of diver calibrations will be acquired during the MOBY recovery. This calibration history will be used to reprocess the data at the end of the deployment. Diver calibrations are made using battery powered calibration lamps that slip over the irradiance and radiance collector housings.

Each collector is calibrated by placing the calibration lamp over the collector housing and acquiring 2-5 scan sets. The lamp is then moved to the next collector and 2-5 more scan sets are acquired. Usually all the Lu collectors are calibrated first followed by the Ed collectors. Scan sets are dark adjusted before ratios are calculated.

There are three types of ratios...

  • Ratio of scan sets within a calibration data set
  • Ratio of monthly calibration data sets with reference
  • Ratio of diver calibrations before and after cleaning
