Deployment Events
THU 17-APR-2003 (107) - The MOBY223 was deployed in the afternoon. On Friday no data has been sent
by MOBY223. On saturday Stephanie came in to MLML at 2:20pm and 8:00 pm to
see if MOBY was attempting to dial in. MOBY223 never tryied to dial the
MLML SGI modem. Ray has checked the SGI and modem a number of times and finds
nothing wrong. On Monday morning, to check and make sure the MLML SGI
was working, Mark had MOBY222 dial in to the MLML SGI which worked. Mark has been
unable to dial MOBY to find out what the problem is. They may have to go out
again on the KOK to fix/retrieve and deploy it again.E-MAIL FROM MARK -------------------------------------------------------------------

Aloha Steph,
We really need to know if the buoy is trying to call into the lab. I am unable
to call into the buoy. This has happened in the past and can last for many
days. In the past however, the buoy was calling out even though I was unable to
call in.
So, can Ray enable the diagnostics so we will know if/when the buoy calls?
As for the last buoy M222, The 22 hour MOBY acquisition was overrunning the
start of the 23 hour file for some reason. Dont know why yet. We will have no
23 hour files for the days you recieved 22 hour files.

I belive the buoy should call the lab at 3:00 and 21:20 GMT

Hi Steph,
MOBY failed to operate properly after deployment due to an improperly set
Schedule. A flaw in the MOBY interface cable caused at least one unnoticed
system reset and communications dropouts while preparing the system just before
launch. This system reset caused the schedule to revert to the default based on
a real time setting used during prior testing (a time way off in September).
Actually MOBY was functioning fine but it wouldnt have activated until
September. This specific problem can be avoided in the future by setting the
real time clock before entering the operational schedule.
Typically this problem would have been caught by double checking the shutdown
sequence and the updated Schedule prior to launch. I decided not to perform
these checks due to the communication cable problems and limited weather window
for the deployment. A backup MOBY communications cable should be available to
allow these checks and prevent deployment delays caused by problems during the
setup procedure.
Normally this problem would also have been found during the in water system
checks performed during the initial diver reference lamp measurements. This was
not possible due to poor weather. We ran out of KOK time and returned to port.
After a few days we came to the determination that there was little chance the
MOBY was operational. So, when weather first permitted, Terry and I took the
small boat from Lahina (with spare cables and computers) to fix the buoy. The
system settings and schedule were again set to the operational mode and double
checked. We stayed connected to the MOBY to observe the successful start of the
20:15 MOB acquisition. Having done all we could at that point, we disconnected
and headed for the barn.
See Ya,
Mark
WED 30-APR-2003 (120) - 30 Apr Stephanie noticed the blue spectrograph data is way too low when
compared to M222 and M219 (See other\M233_is_too_low_30Apr2003.pdf). I removed
the few days of good data from the gold directory and e-mailed Mike and Dennis.
FRI 02-MAY-2003 (122) - We decided the data is OK and put it back on the web.
The ocean got greener is the answer.
SUN 04-MAY-2003 (124) - 20 Hour, WHy
WED 21-MAY-2003 (141) - On 21 May the LuTop data were dark scans and the LuMid data was
too low. However the Ed data from all the arms was OK.
On 22 May the LuMid data looked normal again.
On 23 May the LuMid scans produced dark scans too. This means there is no data
to send to NASA. Mark called Steve from HRA and asked him to take a look at the
buoy on Tue (27 May).
On 25 May the Ed Mid data was messed up too and was too low.
TUE 27-MAY-2003 (147) - On 27 May Divers were dispatched and confirmed the mid-arm was severely
damaged and the support bracket had penetrated the fiber optic channel breaking
the Lu top fiber. This leaves us with the Lu bottom observations
and no Kl measurements
FRI 30-MAY-2003 (150) - On 30 May the EdMid fiber must have finally broken and is not returning only dark scans.
TUE 01-JUL-2003 (182) - LuMid scans shows a little light.
THU 03-JUL-2003 (184) - E-MAIL FROM MARK -------------------------------------------------------------------
HRA (Steve Juarez and Dan Diaz) went to the MOBY site on 3 July to swap
out the failing Argos unit, inspect, photograph and clean. They removed
Argos unit PID# 1536 and installed Unit PID# 9778. They repaired one
Flopper Stopper attachment shackle that was missing seizing wire.
Everything else appeared good with the gimpy MOBY and mooring.
