Deployment Events
FRI 11-JUL-2003 (192) - MOBY224 deployed, Mark had trouble with the new harddrive starting
                            up after it was deployed. MOBY224 attempted to dial in at ~2:25pm but no
                            data was sent, at 3:20pm I unplugged the modem to disconect. Mark when out to the
                            buoy and found the new hard drive was not working. The controller box was removed and
                            they returned to Snug Harbor. All the MOBY223 missing files were downloaded from
                            its hard drive, this hard drive was installed in the MOBY224 controller. Then
                            reinstalled on the bouy, which has still at the morring site. The next day the bouy was
                            dialing in and downloading data.
MON 14-JUL-2003 (195) - 20 hour, LuBot shape changed, not sure why. The 23 hour file data looked ok.
TUE 15-JUL-2003 (196) - Neither the 20 or 23 hour file is readable. Error in ==> C:\MATLAB\mldbase\instrument\moby\Readmob_.m On line 369 ==> Xdat(1:fix(Blue_len/2),Vnum) = fread(fid,[fix(Blue_len/2),1],ushort)
TUE 29-JUL-2003 (210) - E-MAIL FROM TERRY ------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Terrence Houlihan" To: "Stephanie Flora" Cc: "Mark Yarbrough" , Subject: Weather buoy update Date: Mon, 4 Aug 2003 10:08:41 -1000 Stephanie, Here is something for the weather buoy log book: The underwater optical sensor signals for the fluorometer and transmissometer installed on the weather buoy have been slowly degrading over the MMOB03 deployment period from late January 2003 to the present time. The deployed rack including the sensors were recovered and a new underwater package with fresh optical sensors, WETLabs Wetstar fluorometer s/n 468P, WETLabs C Star transmissometer s/n 369PB, Seabird pump, Seabird Microcat s/n 1762 and antifouling canister were installed at 1930 13 July 29, 2003 gmt. The batteries that power the system and corresponding voltages reported by the Zeno data logger indicated a step decrease in voltage coinciding with the package changeover. The reported voltages have since stabilized approximately .7 volts below the previous daily low. Individually disabling the recently installed sensors that are powered by the batteries did not identify a cause for the voltage drop. Please consider the data from the fluorometer and transmissometer to be questionable from the point of deployment for the new package until I am able further trouble shoot this problem and notify you. Thanks, Terry
FRI 22-AUG-2003 (234) - Stephanie Called Mark because the MOBY tilts exceeded ~ 10 degrees. This was the second time with in a week that the MOBY tilts were too high.
MON 25-AUG-2003 (237) - E-MAIL FROM MARK ------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2003 09:28:47 -1000 From: Mark Yarbrough To: "Clark, Dennis" CC: Stephanie Flora , Feinholz Mike , "Houlihan, Terry" Subject: MOBY excessive tilts and exposed top arm Hi all, Steph called on Friday warning me about the excessive tilts and exposed top arm radiances she was again seeing in the recent MOBY scans. The data were looking similar to that of the last MOBY just before losing the middle arm. It looked like the weather was not going to let up to allow a dive cal trip to Maui this week, so I sent Steve to the buoy over the weekend (Saturday) to check MOBY for wrapped tether or other problems. I have included Steves pictures and observations below. About Steves observations and what we can see from the pictures: 1. The drogue line is not even close to "horizontal" so, I think the drogue anchor is still attached. 2. We know the drogue bridle legs are the same length, so the slack leg indicates the current is running at a different angle than the surface current (in the direction of the slack leg) 3. The tilt in the MOBY indicates a strong surface current along with an even stronger "deep" current going in a different direction. 4. The drogue anchor could also be fouled with a net or other object. 5. What boat did Steve take out to MOBY?? I dont think he owns an orange boat. Steve will be in Fiji next week, we will plan a dive cal trip as soon as possible after his return. If the tilt problem continues we may consider cutting the drogue free and replacing it with a new system since we cannot lift the existing drogue to inspect for fouling. Mark

FRI 29-AUG-2003 (241) - 20 and 23 hour, Why is this not a good day?
THU 04-SEP-2003 (247) - 23 hour, 39 point spike on LuBot (a chunck of the data was lifted up)?
FRI 05-SEP-2003 (248) - LuMid has seemed too low for the last few weeks but today it is really too low and looks different.
SUN 14-SEP-2003 (257) - 20 hour, Why is this not a good day?
WED 17-SEP-2003 (260) - 23 hour, On dark Es is at the wrong int time or bin factor (VR 26)?
THU 18-SEP-2003 (261) - 23 hour, I went around about 4 times and could not get this to me a good day!
TUE 23-SEP-2003 (266) - 23 hour, LuMid red side too low to call this a good day?
TUE 07-OCT-2003 (280) - E-MAIL FROM TERRY ------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Terrence Houlihan" To: "Stephanie Flora" Subject: RE: MOBY Weather Date: Tue, 7 Oct 2003 08:35:58 -1000 Yep, the batteries went pau and it took me a couple of days to get over there and put new ones in so that data is missing. It seems to be working now. Terry NOTE: I had e-mailed Terry yesterday and asked why Oct 1 and 2 were missing from the Weather Data.
SUN 12-OCT-2003 (285) - When Stephanie came in to work on Monday the MOBY modem was buzzing as if downloading data. Stephanie turned off the modem and then turned it back on to disconnect MOBY. No MOBY data was downloaded for 12 Oct and the TT7 temperature got up to 111F (44C) and the upper battery volts went down t0 12 volts. On Monday MOBY dialed in a 2:25 pm and downloaded data, everything has been normal since then.
WED 15-OCT-2003 (288) - 20 Hour file: Very close to being good.
SAT 18-OCT-2003 (291) - During the reprocessing of the 22 hour files and incomplete M224 deployment MOBY files Darryl found a problem with 03101820.MOB and 03101823.MOB. The 03101820.MOB file was incomplete with one Es and LuTop scan. A diver cal file with the same name exists. The conclusion is that there is no complete version of this MOBY file. It was likely Mark stopped its data aquisition to start diver cals. Also the 03101823.MOB file was named incorrectly, by looking at the file times is was determined it was a 22 hour file and so we renamed it 03101822.MOB.
WED 22-OCT-2003 (295) - Neither of the MOBY files downloaded to day are readable 20 hour Partial file is not readable, got error message "Error in ==> C:\MATLAB\mldbase\instrument\moby\Readmob_.m On line 372 ==> Xdat(1:fix(Blue_len/2),Vnum) = fread(fid,[fix(Blue_len/2),1],ushort)". 23 hour Partial file is not readable, got error message "Error in ==> C:\MATLAB\mldbase\instrument\moby\Readmob_.m On line 670 ==> ANALOG(1:3:Mf) = FAUX_AD_TYPES".

THU 30-OCT-2003 (303) - 21 Jun 2004: During Stephanie checking of Darryls processing and the MOBY224 web pages Stephanie noticed the zenith angle graphs showed one of the 23 hour files with the zenith angle for a 22 hour file. When investigated Stephanie found that 03103023.MOB was really a 22 hour file named incorrectly. To figure out how this happened Stephanie checked the orginals directory and found 03103023.MOB sent by Mark and and the orginal 03103023.MOB.5647. So she renamed 03103023.MOB to 03103022.MOB and then renamed the original 03103023.MOB.5647 to 03103023.MOB. Both of these files were copied into the precals dir and and the old QCHK file was deleted. Stephanie completely reprocessed both.
FRI 31-OCT-2003 (304) - 20 hour Partial file is not readable, got error message Error in ==> C:\MATLAB\mldbase\instrument\moby\Readmob_.m On line 372 ==> Xdat(1:fix(Blue_len/2),Vnum) = fread(fid,[fix(Blue_len/2),1],ushort) 23 hour Partial file is not readable, got error message Error in ==> C:\MATLAB\mldbase\instrument\moby\Readmob_.m On line 372 ==> Xdat(1:fix(Blue_len/2),Vnum) = fread(fid,[fix(Blue_len/2),1],ushort)
